Meniere's Disease Physical Therapy in Wayne, NJ

Physical therapy can't stop a Meniere's attack — but it's often the missing piece for the imbalance and unsteadiness that linger between attacks and after the disease settles. If Meniere's has left you feeling off-balance, fearful of falling, or deconditioned, vestibular rehabilitation can rebuild your stability. At Spectrum Therapeutics of NJ in Wayne, Dr. Rob Letizia, PT, DPT provides that rehab as part of your overall Meniere's care.

What Is Meniere's Disease?

Meniere's disease is an inner-ear disorder, linked to fluid buildup (endolymphatic hydrops), that causes episodic attacks of vertigo lasting 20 minutes to several hours, along with fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing), and a feeling of fullness in the affected ear. The attacks are unpredictable, and over time the affected ear can lose balance and hearing function.

Where Physical Therapy Fits (an Honest Picture)

It's important to be straight about this: Meniere's is primarily managed medically, usually by an ENT — through approaches like a low-sodium diet, diuretics, and other treatments aimed at reducing attack frequency. Physical therapy does not stop or prevent the attacks. What VRT does do is treat the balance problems that remain between attacks and, especially, the chronic unsteadiness once the disease has "burned out" and left lasting vestibular loss on one side. That residual imbalance is exactly what vestibular rehabilitation is built to fix.

How Does Vestibular Rehab Help with Meniere's?

When attacks have become less frequent or the affected ear has stabilized at a lower level of function, VRT helps your brain compensate for the loss. At Spectrum Therapeutics your one-on-one program includes:

  • Gaze stabilization (VOR) exercises — sharpening steady vision during head movement on the weaker side.
  • Balance and gait retraining — rebuilding confidence on stairs, uneven ground, and in low light to reduce fall risk.
  • Reconditioning — safely rebuilding the activity tolerance that unpredictable attacks often erode.

Timing matters: VRT works best during the stable periods between active flare-ups, and we coordinate with your ENT so rehab complements your medical management.

When Should You See an ENT vs a Physical Therapist?

If you're having active attacks, fluctuating hearing, or you haven't been formally diagnosed, an ENT should lead. Once your physician has Meniere's under medical management and the main issue is leftover imbalance, unsteadiness, or fear of falling, that's when vestibular rehab earns its place. If you're unsure where you are, we're happy to talk it through. For other causes of vertigo, see our vertigo & BPPV page.
